Guedelon ( is the first castle we visited. Unlike the other castles we visited, this one is currently under construction, using as many 13th century techniques as they can. They quarry and finish stone, make rope and tools, fire roofing tile, and forge nails and other tools onsite. There’s a small working farm and a human-powered elevator for moving materials (stone and mortar at the very least) to the highest level of the castle.
